Fire safety inspection
In India, the fire has become one of the major causes of a business becoming bankrupt. When there is a fire in the workplace, it becomes very difficult for a business owner to recover from the loss. The fire causes so much loss that continuing a business creates more problems than shutting it down completely.
You might have heard the phrase “precaution is better than cure” well this fits perfectly in this situation. If you are taking all the safety measures in the workplace, you might not see this coming. Here, the question arises: how can you do that? What are the measures that should be taken to prevent this from happening? And why is it necessary?
What is fire safety inspection?
Building owners or the person in charge of the office think that everything is under control and they don’t need to do a fire safety inspection. The fire safety inspection is the process where a fire safety auditor examines the different areas of the workplace that could lead to a fire and gives you some standards that have to be followed. The standards given by the inspector are basically the precautions that will be helpful if the time comes.
Why is a fire safety inspection necessary?
In India, there are certain fire safety standards that a business owner has to follow. If they fail to do this, they will have to suffer the consequences legally. Apart from that, it is a responsibility to keep the personnel and materials safe. Many businesses have gone out of business because of a fire that ruined everything for them. So it is better to be careful and aware rather than avoiding this process.
Who carries out a fire safety inspection in India?
As per section 10 of the National Building Code of India, 2005, no other person other than a licensed agency shall carry out the fire safety inspection in India. The person shall provide fire preventive measures and life safety measures. If there is no need for maintenance in a workplace and everything is up to the standards, then the licensed agency will give a fire safety certificate.
What happens in a fire safety inspection?
In a fire safety inspection, fire inspectors study the different parts of a building where a fire can start. They try to determine the different ways a fire could possibly start within the workplace. They check if the building has necessary equipment such as fire extinguishers, smoke alarms, sprinkler systems, etc. They will also check if the pieces of equipment are working or not.
They give basic training to the people in the building to prepare them for the incident. They educate people on how they can respond to the prevailing situation and help others. If they find any shortcomings, you will be required to correct them. They will inspect it again to see if you have followed the procedure and made changes.
A fire safety inspection is a precaution that every business owner must take to follow the standards that the government has set and to keep the personnel safe.
